If you want a pemanent solution to hold down forward hatch that's cheap ($5) email me directly (archautenreith@hotmail.com) and I'll email you 3 .jpgs showing how to do it. I'd post it here but I don't know how to attach or show it here on the forum. Nice forum, by the way.Arch

Arch, I have a 1977 Montauk and have never had a probelm with the hatch. My montauk came from the factory with a six inch piece of bungee cord at the front end to hold it down, maybe yours is missing causing you to have to revert to a non-factory fix,Alioop |

Alioop. Thanks. Your comment is interesting. Mine's an '84 and had nothing holding it down whatsoever. I've had no less than 8 replys since posting this last night asking for my solution as they all had the same problem I had. I'll email you pictures of my fix. Can you explain more specifically how yours is held down? Thanks. |

My '98 has nothing holding down the hatch cover. I used Velcro. Works fine if you get the right (waterproof adhesive) Velcro. But I'm always willing to look at another idea. Chuck Tribolet |

At some point in time, between 1986 & 1989, Whaler started using two hinges on the forward edge of the bow locker cover. They also started using these on the starboard edge of the similar Outrage bow locker covers. this detail is still being used on the 2000 Montauks. For a starter, if your boat doesn't have these, this would be a first solution. But then, as Chuck has indicated, you often have the rear edge bouncing up & down, and this is where a little velcro works quite easily & successfully. I also use this on my Outrage covers. Highly recommended & simple. |

My '84 Montauk does have hinges in the front so the bungee fix works well for this application. Thanks for letting me know about the others having/not having hinges. That would explain some of the emails I've gotten. There aren't many Whalers in Pittsburgh so I don't often get the chance to see how others were made. |

Further to my above note on Montauk & Outrage bow locker cover hinges, at some point in time, Whaler moved the hinges on the Montauk cover to the starboard side, as they are still doing in the 2000 models. They also began using this detail on the Outrage covers in 1989,(instead of the inside bungee clip detail) and is highly recommended. This helps prevent the cover from lifting due to wave action, and then the simple solution of adhesive velcro works on the port edge to hold the cover down. |
