I have a 1972 Katama 16 with the "Flying top weather protection system" - the Whaler name for bimini top and a forward cabin section. However I don't know exactly how to rig the forward section. Does anyone know where to fasten the lines? Thanks

Ger: Mills/Whaler furnished very detailed installation and operation drawings of the flying top sets. Since very few 16/17's have this equipment, I doubt if anyone here will know the answer. I would call Mills first, and see if they can send you the drawing. If not, maybe the folks at Whaler have it somewhere. Is yours the tan canvas that was used on the earlier models?

Look for the information on the Mills website. You can find a link on the WHALER-RADIO section of the website.

I think I have an original instruction set from Mills that I could copy. Let me know.

I think I have the Mills drawings too, probably from the early 70's I can't scan them but I could possibly take digital photos of them and email to you. I'll have to dig them out.

Ger,

Leslie at Mills Canvas recently mailed me drawings for hardware placement to mount all canvas pieces on early 70's Outrage 21's. Sure she would do same for your Katama.

I have Forward Shelter for my 73OR21 but is not Mills; made by canvas shop in Largo,FL out of Sunbrella fabric. Fortunately, it looks like never been used. I have feeling it was a replacement made from old Mills shelter for a previous owner. Wish I had photo which shows characteristics of original Mills shelter(Leslie would not provide that - trade secret); I have brochures which show small pictures of canvas pieces but not how they fit together. I am wanting to get Aft Curtain to attach to Forward Shelter and make mooring cover. Would buy Mills curtain if knew would fit/attach but probably have to have custom made by canvas shop back in Ohio.

Andy Gere has the Mills system on is Montauk, I recall is a '79. He helped me out understanding my flying top lines, which I had mounted incorrectly.

You can see several shots of Andy's boat and his forward shelter at http://www.garlic.com/~triblet/sfwhalerrendezvous/ .

On my forward shelter (which is not from Mills) there is one strap on each side that holds the aft hoop back. The staps hook to fittings on the inside of the gunnel back by the console. There is a foward hoop that lies down on the deck and there are a couple of deck mounted fittings to hold it down. The middle hoop has some staps to limit the distance from the aft hoop. I think the Mills system may have one more hoop than mine, though.
