I have a b.w. 17' "something" that needs almost total restoration and has a chevy 4 cyl. full inboard, I want to use it as a fishing/utility boat in southern louisiana. Should I try having the chevy rebuilt? Or just pull the bugger and start over w/ an outboard? It has a nice platform and is rigged for trolling, and I'm told ran real good when it ran. Just takes up a little more room and pushes the console close to the back.

Benja -

I've never heard of such a critter...

Does the motor installation look homebrewed?

Regarding the inboard vs outboard decision, I think you have to check around on the costs of a chev rebuild and check the costs of a new or used outboard. Keep in mind that when changing to the outboard, some additional costs are coming into play with steering and throttle systems.

Post a picture sometime.

Best - Don

Hey Benja I had a 17 whaler with a 140 Merc inboard outboard . I ran this setup for several years.Mine was stearn heavy mostly due the outdrive.I eventualy switched back to a 85 hp outboard. I liked the outboard much better only lost about 8mph and got better fuel economy and had more room.I think I would look at the overall quality of the instalation.Mine was excelent the floor had been cut out to keep the center of gravity low, and looked in every way like a factory instalation except the outdrive hung to low below the bottom and the package as a whole was to heavy.

Mine has the engine recessed also, and it looks pretty darn good, its just been sitting ouside for 12 yrs. I apreciate the responses and I'll get some estimates on rebuilding. How much did you spend on the conversion back to o.b.? Was it a big deal and did you do it yourself? If yall think of anything else yell
thanks Benja
