Well it finally did it. After 7 years of never giving me a problem, I cannot break the grip on the upper end of the driveshaft twice annualy I remove and replace the lower unit and lightly coating the splines w/ waterproof grease. The last couple times I noticed it was getting more difficult, don't know if it is built up gunk or, hopefully not, rust. Anyways I can get feeler gauges up to .030 from the front to about the water pump location, then no go. Anyone have a suggestion short of the dealer (2 hrs away). 1991 100hp merc.

got it. penetrant and a little time. I didn't want to jamb anything in the mating surface to pry. Side note. I have always cleaned the threaded holes for the bolts of the white powder that grows there. What is this stuff and how do I prevent it? Our motor sees salt about 30% of time and is always risned well. The power head looks fine (as does the rest of it) but the white stuff growing in the concealed places eats at me.
