rub rail cleanup

The rub rail on my Montauk, while not completely trashed, was pretty ugly, mostly rubber smudges from dock fenders. I was thinking about replacing the whole thing until I used some #7 rubbing compound, the red stuff, on it. I followed up with an application of "tire foam" (I'm sure any automotive rubber cleaner/glosser would work just as well). Except for some deep gouges, the rail looks almost new. Just thought I would pass along this tip.
