The sport I just bought has a 33hp Johnson on it. The starter has a bad bendix in it and the alternator drive gear has been removed. The previous owner was apparently running it this way. The question is, does the engine need the alternater to run? Or does it just use it for charging the battery and other acc. If we just use it around the lake it should not be a problem? I think? Where is the best source for the parts and manuals I need to bring this engine up to par? I have used Fairwinds Marina in Maryland for other parts.
On the front deck of this 66 sport is a round depression sort of shape about 10" or so in diameter? Anyone have an idea of what this may be from?
Thanks, Bruce

I believe you need the alternator. It generates electricty to run the motor and charge the starting battery. The battery will supply power without the alternator until of course it runs out of juice. Then you are (pardon the expression) "dead in the water"
