I just purchased a 79 Montauk, and I'd like to add the cooler seat and seatback. The cooler is easy, just need to decide if I want to pay an $80 premium for the cushion so it matches. The real issue is the seatbacks. Dave's sells the cushions ($ouch$) and I imagine I could get the rod rack from Whaler. I kind of like the idea of building one out of teak, and using the factory style cushions on it. Has anyone done anything similar, or know of a design? My alternative is to buy the cushions, rough out a design in plywood, then build the final in teak. Any help would be appreciated.

I bought a set of rod holders (3) that come on two strips of either teak or starboard.I wanted to install them on the starboard side of my console so they would not be in my line of sight while underway. I realized that the pieces of teak that come with it do not set the tubes far enough out to keep the rods from hitting the hand rail on the console.I have some 1" teak and made my own. They only need to be about an inch and a quarter deeper(further out away from the console). I gave them 7 coats of Cetol and they look great.

I done the same on my 79 Montauk. I now have the cooler seat, rod holders, and back rest. I love it. I made my own rod holders using teak then added the back rest to it. I went with the tan/brown pleat cusion and the same in the back rest. If I can be of help let me know.
