I have looked in Marinas, West Marines, Boat US's and Boaters Worlds from Key West to Portland, Maine to Killarney, Ontario, and I cannot find stainless steel *bar stock* (not flat stock) strap eyes, like the ones Mills Canvas sends to screw to the hull and then snap suntop guy straps to.

Does anyone *please* have a source from which I can acquire some of these apparently and surprisingly rare birds??

TIA

I'm not quite sure what you are looking for,
but it sure sounds like what West Marine
calls a "footman's loop".

"TIA"

They are called eye pads and the only firm I have found with the cast ss is Sea Dog --- they also make a stamped ss and a bronze -- Taylor only makes them in nylon and Zamak called eye straps -- and Perko makes zinc ones.

SD Part# SS cast SDG 081 12001 eye pad 3/8" eye

I believe but couldn't locate the part that Sea Dog also makes an "eye strap" in solid not stamped ss sold in 4 packs, bought some at a small Marine store in Jupiter this Spring ---

Chuck the "footman's" loop is for attaching the webbing through.

Hope this helps John ---- Tom

Chuck-these things (eye straps, or strap eyes) look like a re-curved bow (as in bow-and-arrow) in profile with the re-curved ends flattened out and a counter-sunk screw hole in each end; in my case, and I think it's pretty standard, at least in zamak, chrome and plastic, the screw holes are around 1-3/8" to 1-1/2" o.c. - they appear in the various catalogs usually under bimini top accessories, but are not made of ss (with the exception of the ones made from thin flat stock, which are not what I want).

Tom, I think you are talking about what I am looking for, but I don't know myself if I'm looking for stamped or cast?? (too many options)

Where do I find Sea Dog stuff?

Thanks In Advance

JCF

John --- made a slight error they are forged solid ss not cast --- Sea Dog stuff can be ordered by your local marina store -- most marine distributors carry them --- will be at ours today and check on them for you --- I know exactly what you need --- and I believe that SD # is correct but will double check --- Tom

John if you by chance have a Hamilton catalog from Portland Maine look under pad eyes and they have the forged eye straps ss in 3 sizes listed -- -- the SDog "eye pad" is similar but much heavier --- Tom

John,

I think Shoreway Marine, 800-443-5408, has the stainless steel eye straps you're looking for on page 125 of most recent catalog. They look exactly like the chrome-plated zinc ones everyone else has. They are catalog #10595 and are $3.25/each. BTW I checked the eye straps for my flying top supplied by Mills and I think they are chrome-plated zinc. Good luck.

Otay!
I've got a Hamilton Marine catalog on the way, I've got a Shoreway Marine catalog on the way, and I have SEEN THE LIGHT...no, I have seen the eyepad or padeye or whatever in Sea-Dog's on-line catalog, identified it and requested the name of the locallest supplier of Sea-Dog stuff be sent to me - I am on my way to cornering the market on ss eye straps!

Steve, I have believed the eye straps that came with my Mills sun top were stainless - maybe not - maybe that's why I've had such a devil of a time duplicating them in stainless...anyway, Ima gonna have some stainless, now!

Thanks guys,

John

Try looking in the sailboat section of a big marine catalogue (like West). Sailors use eye straps or pad eyes, and, of course, stainless steel is the choice of material, heck maybe even titanium to save weight for racing.

Harken and others are the usual suppliers.

Jimh --- chuckle that's over kill to say the very least these are just eye snaps for the the Mills canvas there tiny little things in ss --- on a sailboat you'd use them as bungee lash downs at the very most! --- Tom

Update--

Hamilton Marine catalog has arrived (still waiting on the others), and I have found my ss strap eyes.

At the same time, finding myself occasionally curious about your comment, Steve, I finally took a Taylor chrome eye strap out for a side-by-side comparison with the Mills-supplied eye straps on Outre', and guess what? They look just the same...

I think I'm still going to corner the market, anyway-
