The motor that was on the 13ft
whaler with the hull damage is a
72 johnson 20 hp. The previous
owner managed to strip the pinion
gear right before i came to buy
it. A new one was bought (
130.00) and installed, but upon
starting the motor the water pump
was not working, so it was shut
down. Seems that the old gear fit
in its place nicely, but the new
gear is a much tighter fit, to
the point of needing to tap in
place. The therory is its so
tight the shaft wouldnt turn,
thus no water. His local dealer
said to sand the gear down. I feel
the race it sits in, dont know
what its called, but it appears
to be bronze, and is scored,
needs to be replaced also. any ideas? Sand it? What about the water pump, should I replace the impeller while its apart? Thanks
