I want to mount a sterseat that I got this Christmas. I want to mount it before spring gets here if I can, however; when mounting the hardware, I need to drill 4 holes for each bracket. (4 brackets) I hate to drill holes in the side of my '79 Montauk. The question that I have is, has anyone mounted a sternseat anyother way than using the supplied hardware. I need help!

Is that a factory stern seat? The one I mounted in my Montauk last year came with 2 base plates that attached to the floor and then the seat attached to them with thumb screws. Nothing attached to the sides.

I had 1989 with factory stern seat and it sat on the ledge and it had the two clips attached to the sides that allowed it to be easily taken in or out. Nothing underneath. It was up high enough that I bought a new 4 hp Johnson kicker and wrapped it in bubble wrap and stowed it under the seat. It is a tight fit but by raising one side of the seat and then putting back down it fit. Never used it but the guy who bought the boat said he tested it and it pushed the Montauk just fine. Plus, he used it on his canoe and row boat etc.

Yes it is a factory seat. It installs using a male plate that slides into a female base. The male section is mounted to the underside of the seat while the female base attaches to the inside of the boat just below the lip that the seat rest on. Proper installation calls for four of these total. I just really hate to drill 16 holes on the inside of my boat.

I am going to mount the seat this week. Is there any ideas on what type of sealent I should use around the screws once I have drilled the holes? Is there any wood just below the inside lip where the sternseat sits? I know that this subject has been covered somewhere before.
