My motor is stuck in the center position. I have tried in the past to keep the motor to the side where the end of the cable is all the way inside of the jacket, thereby keeping it lubricated instead of being exposed. I lubed the end of the cable and had a friend slightly put pressure on the wheel while I pushed on the motor. No luck. Any Ideas how to fix this problem? Thanks,Shay

Your best bet:

--buy new steering cables

--install Steersman seal/lube fitting

--keep clean and well lubricated

Yes, a seal nut and regular greasings are the best ways to keep a steering cable working smoothly. But frozen steering cables are a fact of life, especially during long term storage. The problem is almost always rust inside the tilt tube building up and squeezing the steering cable. To free it up, use some penetrating oil (WD-40 works fine) on the tilt tube and cable. Disconnect the steering cable from the tilt tube by loosening the nut all the way. Disconnect the steering connecter bar from either the cable end itself. Use a hammer and a block of wood on the cable end and rap it all the way out of the tilt tube. If you have the appropriate bit, use it in a drill to ream out any rust build up in the tilt tube. Grease all parts well and reassemble.

I let it sit and it was free this morning. I asked a friend about it and he suggested that I move the motor once a week durring the winter. Thanks for your replies.

Maybe I was too quick to suggest new cables. I like to keep stuff out of landfills myself, but stuck steering could really ruin a good day of boating.

Take Tom's good advice first and save yourself some money, too.
