This is a sealed type battery with 1000MCA or 850 CCA. The part that interested me the most was the a very slow self discharge rate. They claim that the battery can sit for about one year year without a maintenance charge and still start your boat. Has anyone purchased one of these batteries and what was your experience? The URL to the spec page follows.

These batteries are popular here in AZ where the heat tends to kill batteries in a short time. They can be mounted on their sides without leakage. Corrosion seems to be much reduced, but not totally eliminated. My last Optima lasted six years in a vehicle. I have not allowed one to remain unused for long periods of time. I think the lack of terminal corrosion is related to reduced outgassing. Seems like that would be great in many marine applications.

"Powerboat Reports" rated the Optima "our choice for sealed batteries". Don

Excellent period!

These are a lead acid battery, older battery chargers and unregulated outboard charging systems won't kill them.

Totally sealed with safety plugs just in case they do get fried.

The deep cycle shouldn't be used for starting unless in an emergency and the starter rated battery shouldn't be used as a regular house battery.

These in the automotive battery are used extensively by the 4x4 off road competition crowd. Meaning the shock resistance is outstanding.

Cabela's has the best price we have found, even with shipping over any local battery dealer.

Interstate Battery distributors handle them, sold through their local jobbers if you can't find them. Just ask your local store that carries Interstate to order for you.

Thanks for all of the helpful information. Now, one last question. What battery box are you using with the Optima Marine starting battery? Cabella'a recommends a "Power Station Battery Box", which contains a circut breaker and a cigarette light/power port. This seems most appropriate for a trolling motor application rather than a starting motor on an outboard.

Yes, that box is designed for trolling motor applications and the combo deep cycle/starting batteries similar to what Sears, Interstate etc sell.

Order a battery box from your Whaler dealer or just use an Attwood.
