Tapping the hull with a small block of wood is a good method. Sounding for changes in sound when rappingg on the hull could imply some water absortion. If it sounds sharp throughout, you are probably OK. If it has areas that emit a dull thud, could be trouble. Pay attention to areas near thru hulls/mounting bolts etc at or near the waterline. If the boat seems unusually heavy, thats also a sign of bad news...
Good Luck.
