Adjusting Binnacle Control

I am unable to properly adjust the throttle friction of the control. It has too much friction and is difficult to move when increasing the throttle, decreasing throttle is easier w/less friction, just about right. It is an OMC control and was new last year, prior to my owning the boat, a montauk with a 90hp Johnson. There are two adjustments, one for throttle friction and one for detent force. No matter how I adjust the screws, it doesn't increase or decrease the friction. I checked the cables, they appear to be in good condition, not caught up on anything in the tunnel and have a properly sized loop at the engine. I even checked for lubrication around the ends. I welcome your suggestions.

If the detent screws don't do it, then your problem is in the cables. Also make sure everything is working properly at the engine. The cables are probably bad. I once had the same problem, with BRAND NEW cables from an off brand. I switched to new Teleflex cables (who also makes Mercury's cables) and the problem was solved.
