My Garmin fishfinder keeps shutting off because it is programmed to shut off when battery/charging exceeds 16 volts. I did put in a voltage regulator but now think the constant 16.4 will cook the battery. Anyone know if this is the specified charging volts for a Mercury? 1980 model. BTW, the Garmin tech asked me if it was a Mercury OB because this seems to be a common thing with these engines.

What I meant was does anyone know if thier OB charges at 16+ volts?

Arch - see thread in this section last dated 5/24/01. I had same problem.

Your engine probably needs voltage regulator service. Merc's voltage regulators are capped at 14.2 volts.

Yes, you will damage the battery, if not already. I just went through the same thing.
