Has any one had any experience with a product called marine-tex to repair chips in the gelcoat along the keel?

marine tex is a SUPER item...Have used it to repair areas that were rotted, on outboards that were chipped..under water, above line it works! Easy to sand and paint.."I never leave port without it!" As far as a replacement for Gel coat, I would doubt it. For holes, gouges etc I would give it a 10+Good luck Chad |

Marine-tex, manufactured by Illinois Tool Works, is great material, but is designed to have the gelcoat applied, or painted on, over it.If your chips are not too big, just use the pure gelcoat as a filler (probably in paste version), or add some fiberglass chopped fibers to it, making a "mash", and apply that, leaving a slight indentation for the gelcoat finish. Then paint over with pure gelcoat, sand, buff, etc. These are basically BW's old instructions, paraphrased. |

Marine-Tex can be used to repair a cracked engine block. This stuff is tough. I used some to repair an unusual break in a teak hatch. Pipe clamped the two pieces, sanded the 'push-out', and it looks great and has lasted 2 years with constant use. I've even seen people groove it. As far as I know, it works with just about any material you need to repair. |

Marine-Tex was used to fill holes on my Whaler Drive where a kicker mounting plate used to be. The patck is great, and with just some manual scoring, they were able to approximate the non-skid. If you weren't looking for it, you could not see the patch.Brian |

I remember reading once about a single-hander ( sailing that is ) who used MarineTex to replace a tooth filling while at sea.... Believe it or not.... Soho |
