I am going to compound and wax my HEAVILY OXIDIZED hull this weekend and I was wondering if anyone of this forum had a perference to the brand/type of compound and wax to use.

Also does anyone recomed a light sanding with an extremely fine wet/dry sand paper before applying the compound.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks !!

Had a detail shop for 8 years. If it is badly faded, use a 1000 grit wet sand on it. Do not sand the crap out of it, just give a nice light sanding by hand. hard to tell if paper is getting bad so split a sheet into 1/4's. 1/4 should do each side, the others for the inside. I love the 3m rubbing compound it's tan in a clear bottle with red lettering, use this if you do not sand. After sanding, i use the dupont polish compound (No 7, in the green can). Then 2 coats of wax and she should look new. Try compounding before you wet sand. Most of the times the outside just needs compound. The inside(especially blue) might need wetsanding. Have fun! Oh use a polisher grinder for the compounding. DOing by hand is a waste of time. If you do not have one, go to sears and get the 7" for $49. The best $ you will spend on a powertool.

There is a lot info on this subject in the Forum. Look around for it, as it's worth the effort to find. IF you're going to wet sand (hard to believe the boat is THAT bad), I would try #2000 first. If that doesn't do it, then try #1500. also has some suggestions on this subject.
