I just noticed a small crack in the transom of my 1986 18’6’ Outrage. The crack is located on the port side about 4 inches from the motor, on top of the transom about 3/8” from the stern. The crack itself is about 2 1/2inches long. It is a hair line in the gel coat What steps should I take? What is the long term prognosis?

Might be nothing. Put a mark on each end and see if it grows. Is it through the gel? |

Is it a hairline in the gel coat or is the transom actually cracking? I have seen this in several boats, this is a mating area i.e.where the inner and outer hulls mate. i think Whaler calls this the 'green line'?? If water is allowed to ingress it could start rot in the wood of the transom, and if it freezes it will expand and split more. I pry the crack open with a small screwdriver, pour epoxy in the crack and clamp with a c clamp then sand flush. While I was repairing some small nicks in my gel coat I applied a light coat of gel coat repair to the entire transom seam area. 15 sport,James-0 |
