I am looking for help in mounting downriggers to my 15' sport. I am not sure how to go about this as there is no surface to accept the 4"x4" mounting base and I do not want to drill into the top of the hull without some sort of support. I am sure somebody must have mounted a downrigger to a Whaler but have been unable to find anyone???

VT...if you check the older posts,( probably in the General section)you will find many suggestions for rail mount downriggers. By the way, is it still fishing when you use downriggers? Or is it harvesting? (just kidding)

For a 15 or 16/17 Whaler, the best way to mount downriggers is with an "L" shaped 4 x 4 plate (both legs) by Helm Products, in Chicago. I think West Marine handles these. These mount on the horizontal rail at the vertical stantions and have integral thumb screw clamps for the rails.
The downrigger mounts on the horizontal surface, and the vertical surface supports it against the side rail stantion. The entire downrigger can be removed easily when not needed. Simple, clean, no holes needed. A nice combination with Big John lightweight Downriggers.
