I know I've read it somehere on this site, but what is a safe lube for the rubber o-rings under the deck plates on an 18' Outrage?

Thanks

Just about anything. Vaseline, bearing grease, lithium grease.

Use something heavy and waterproof. Clean up any and all that squeezes out after pressing in the deck plate.

Tom is right that darn near anything will
work. The HW store should have something
called plumber's grease that should be
pretty good. I use it on the big O-rings
on my pool and hot tub pumps.

The perfect stuff is probably Dow-Corning
111. It's made for lubing valves and won't
wash away. http://www.mcmaster.com/
and search on Dow-Corning paste. About $10
for enough to last you a lifetime. Also good
for electrical connections on a boat.

Whatever you use, you don't need much on an
o-ring. Just enough to make it shiny and
slippery, not enough that you can see any
thickness anywhere. The grease doesn't keep
the water out, it just keeps the o-ring from
deforming due to friction as things go
together.

O-ring greasing is a ritual for us UW
photographers. It's how we worship the
gods Nikon and Neptune, and keep them from
ever meeting. ;-)

it comes in a very small bottle (3/4oz) but goes a long way. never sticks and holds under preasure as on the pool pump. any pool suply should have this or can get it for you. this is the kind.
