I'm setting up my 1979 Johnson 85 hp for permanent residence in a saltwater slip, and I don't know where to mount the zinc anodes, or what type to buy. Both the owner's manual and the factory shop manual simply say "see your dealer". Johnson dealers are getting hard to find, and the only one anywhere near me is a freshwater trailer boat type. West Marine has all kinds of OMC anodes, but none of the fit guides go back earlier than 1990. Descriptions, part numbers and installation tips will be much appreciated. --Andy

Sorry, I have done a search on all the Topics and can't find a match for "Anodes". I have a related question as to fresh and saltwater anodes. Maybe bringing this to the top will get us some direction to the answer.

Andy,
There is no difference in the anodes for fresh or salt water. The best anodes we found for our OMC engines are the factory OMC anodes. The anodes from other sources do not seem to offer the same sacrificial qualities. My advise is to find the nearest Johnson or Evinrude dealer and purchase the factory anodes.

As a distributor of Canada Matals anodes, there is no difference. An anode is an anode.
All of the older anodes were made of zinc and worked very well some of the newer ones are aluminum, more friendly to the enviorment, but a trade off.

I am not sure what your engine requires for an anode other than a trim tab. If extra protection is needed you can allways hang a grounded zinc plate over the side while moored.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to check with the local Johnson guy who I have learned is not selling them anymore, but still servicing them. In the meantime, my new Rule Platinum has had a circuit board failure and needs to be replaced on warranty. It's always something...
