Very simply - where does the main brace of a Montauk sun top connect to the boat. I have a 1988 model that has mounts screwed into the inner side of the hull, halfway btween the end of the bow rail and start of the side rail. They are screwed into the back- up wood, which I can find because of the slightly raised areas. There are also small strap eyes fore and aft where the tension straps would connect. I have looked at all my Whaler Catologs since 81 and can't find one that shows a montauk with the sun top up.

If it is Mills, you can probably get them to send you one of the dimensioned BW installation diagram sheets.

And if it is a Mills, if my memory serves me correctly, the main bows have sliders on the ends that travel in tracks attached to the topsides of the gunwales.

Thanks, thats what I was looking for. I have seen some pictures with the gunnel mounted sliders, and others that the sliders were mounted to the inner side of the hull, where it bumps out (where the bases for the railings are attached) What purpose do the sliders actually serve. My 22 had a mills top w/sliders, but the main support never moved fore to aft along the slider. Would there be any reason for it not to be a fixed point?

Dan-

I had a Mills suntop on a previous Montauk and I have one now on my Outrage 22. In both cases the main bow is on sliders (on top of the gunwales) because when the top was up, in order for it to be more or less level with the gunwales and covering anything behind the center console, the intersection of the main bow and the gunwales has to be some distance aft of where that same intersection is when the top is folded and moved forward to stow. (Outside the rails on a Montauk and inside the rails on an Outrage.) I used even longer slide tracks than Mills sent in both cases because I wanted more sun cover aft of the console than their plan provided.

The bimini on my montauk is a sunbrella that is mounted outside the rails at fixed points(its not from mills). My mooring cover and console cover are both from mills. I can't use the mooring cover because it won't fit around the bimini mounting points. I think I'm going to add sliders so that I can slide the bimini foward to where the of slots are in the mooring cover, rather than add more slots in the mooring cover. The cover has slots for the bow rails supports.

I have found that I rarely use the bimini while underway. I tend to use it when I'm working on the boat.

By the way, the new whaler website shows a new montauk with a bimini mounted outside the rails on sliders.
