I've sanded off 30 yrs.of bottom paint ,barnacles and what not.I would like to protect the bottom from abrasions and wear.Since I have a gallon of polyester resin,I thought I would coat the bottom with it.It is basically clean but for stains of bottom paint color and ghostly images of the barnacles. Can I polester over this,or must I remove every blemish.I don't want to go deeper then necessary.

Maybe four favorite kind of advice -- it is mine too when correct --- :)

You sanded off the bottom paint corect!? --- you now have a very porious gelcoat which will absorb water --- had best overcoat it with a barrier coat -- thus the name "barrier" --- just get the bottom to about a 100 grit level -- good luck with whatever you do ---
