I'm trying to remove my teleflex steering wheel from the console. I removed the cap, nut and washer. Do I need a wheel puller to remove the wheel? There's 3 bolts under the colar, but until I remove the wheel I cant get to them.

I had the same problem with my 72 Katama and its stainless spoke wheel on the teleflex setup. I took it off about 6 weeks ago. It fits on a keyed and tapered shaft. I did not know it was tapered till I removed the wheel. I put the nut back on to protect the threads and pounded with a block of wood and pulled on the wheel to no avail. Would be easier with two people. None of my pullers fit the hub either, although some must fit. I soaked it with liquid wrench and then J & B Blaster penetrant (as suggested by my auto mechanic as the best penetrant he has used in over 25 yrs of general auto repairs). Still tight, so I alternated between penetrant and carefully heating the hub with my micro torch and it came loose. Too bad the hub is not tapped with with bolt holes on either side of the center so you could force it off with a bar across the steering shaft and a couple of bolts to drive it toward the tapped holes like some other press fit assemblies I have repaired over the years. Hope this helps...Tim

The wheel is on a tapered shaft. Use a socket that fits over the stud to hit the end of the shaft to knock it out. Make sure not to hit the stud!
