I posted this same question at the tailend of the thread on Montauk rail mounting, where it shouldn't be.

The rail fittings and the rod holders on this '82 OR18 are all chrome on brass and all look bad.

Replacing them with the same. . . chrome on brass. . . would cost me about 2 hundred bux. Replacing them with all SS would cost a bit more than twice as much.

This is the opposite problem to the Bimini top issue, where you can save lots by not duplicating the original. Here I am looking at saving hundreds by not improving on the original.

Thoughts? Comments?. . . Thanks.

The rod holders recessed into the gunwales on Boston Whaler boats are usually the Lee's of Miami brand, which is the top quality choice for this item.

I am not sure how you are going to find better ones that those.

I agree, Jim, and going to SS Lee holders is only about $50 more than the plated ones. The big cost difference is in the rail fittings, like the horiz. ones on the console rail at the sides of the console. . . I haven't found a source of SS replacements for them. . .yet.

Thanks for the input.

Might check into having all re-chromed.

Not sure where you got your prices but Lee's original style ss is only about $10 bucks more than the brass chrome units. Average around $60 a piece for ss $50 for the chrome.

Your '82's rod holders are I believe a lot heavier casting than what they currently offer --- I would think re-chroming --- unless extremely prohibitive. SS in my mind just doesn't have the heft or elegance of heavy brass chrome plated ones -- each is own though--
