At high rpms my 82 Johnson seems to have a shudder that is very noticible. It happens about every 15-30 seconds any ideas

If it is a miss like a quick pause it can be a few things. If idling crappy, do the carbs and a fuel pump(cheap). If still active check the coils, could be breaking up at high speeds. Pull the cover at night and look for a spark show is one way. 3rd could be your lower unit. If lower it would run great but skip everynow and then. I doubt the latter but have had it happen and sounded like an intermittent miss.

Well it is a 1982 35 Johnson electric start don't remember the exact model number right now, if it will help I'll get it.
Carbs were just redone. Runs pretty good during idle. Hard shudder at high to med rpms. Hope this helps some. Thnks for you guys input.

Tell me more about the lower unit problem.
The engine runs great but the shudder/pause/skip is really annoying and also concerns me.

thanks again,

Basically a skip in the drive train. Usually the last resort in problems, would only happen on plane, etc. I would look at carbs and shift adjustments first. If it is not gouing into forward all the way it could do the same.

The motor I had the skip in the foot was an 82 35hp Johnson. It was after about 800 hours and a lot of dredging. Also happened to my buds 1984 50hp Johnson.
