Hey there. Other than a bad coil or plug, what could cause the top cylinder to have no spark after it ran fine all season on my Merc 40? Both cylinders have good compression and the engine was totally rebuilt about five years ago. Does anyone have any ideas?

By the way; it is a 1981.

Wayneman,

I had a similar problem on my vintage Evinrude 40 this last weekend. I swapped everything around and was convinced I had isolated it down to the top cylinder coil. I went out and bought 2 new coils and it turned out it may have just been a plug.

With new coils in top and bottom, one plug wouldn't spark in either cylinder, the other would plug would.

I was so sure I had it isolated to the coil, but now I'm not sure if I swapped plugs back and forth.

At least I have the "confidance" that new coils give...

Bad spark plug wire?

If separate coils, bad power to one coil.

I'd start by swapping coils, wire, and plugs
to the other cylinder. See if the problem
moves (or goes away, might just be a bad
connection). If it doesn't move, look else
where. If it does, swap them back one at a
time.

Thanks guys. I couldn't find any loose or frayed wires and the plugs looked excellent. I was hoping to fix it and get in back in the water but it snowed here. (Hudson Valley in NY). Thanks again.
