Just wanted to say "thanks" for the guidance on modifying the new 94-quart Igloo cooler to fit under the rod holder cushions. When I was fortunate to buy my '86 Montauk, the original cooler was badly cracked, but the lid was in great shape. My family gave me the "new and improved" version of the cooler (the 94 quart installment), but with the cushion on the new cooler it wouldn't fit very well under the rod holder seat back. A while back I read a suggestion that I simply replace the new lid with the one from the old 86-quart cooler, which would then fit perfectly. I did so, and it fits like a champ.

Thanks for the good pointer. I look forward to learning more.

I have the same problem..... But I do not have an old 86 cooler lid. Does anyone know where I could find one?

I'm having the same trouble. I bought an 88 Montauk and it had a badly cracked cooler. I went out yesterday and purchased the new 94 qt Igloo and it won't fit correctly under the rod holder cushion. I can't open the lid at all unless I pull the thing out. How do I fix this?

I had the same problem with the new cooler. If you relocate your cooler cleats out away from the console a little and spin cooler so the hinges are on the outside (opposite the way it is now) it should work. This puts the cooler cushion just at the bottom of the the back rest cushions.
Hope this helps.

Did a similar thing with lid swapping.

I have an Igloo 48 that I bought back in the 70s for my Sakonnet. It has the integral cushioned lid with the embossed Igloo logo, but the liner has shrunk and cracked. I have been wishing for years for a way to restore it.

Meanwhile, I bought an Igloo Super Cold 50 and put an OEM cushion on it.

On an inspiration, I measured both lids and VIOLA!! The classic Igloo lid fits the 50 like they were made to go together. So I now have a super cold . . . um . . . 49?? with the classic Igloo look and a much more comfortable cushion than even the BW OEM snap on cushions. It will go in front of the console on my Striper 15.

Red sky at night. . .

If anybody want an Igloo 48 quart cooler with the ORIGINAL low profile lid, West Marine had them on sale last week for $19.95!

I have a 94 quart Igloo on my 86 Montauk. I sold the cooler cleats to a fellow CW member. The cooler is held in place with a bungee cord stretched from the cooler handle to a stainless eye mounted on the center console teak base. Since I don't have to deal with 5+ foot seas, the arrangemet works just fine. The cooler is positioned like it should be with the hinges to the rear for easy access. I made my own rod holders/cushion holders out of teak and mounted them as high as possible. The rod holders resemble pool cue racks but are mostly hidden by the snap on cushions.
