I just sold a '92 9.9hp Yamaha kicker "As is, Where is". Electric start, long shaft. The price was right for the guy. I hadn't run it in 3 yrs, on an engine stand in my garage. Now, apparently it starts just fine and can be put into reverse- on muffs. It won't go into forward. Any ideas on the problem. I'd like to help the fella with any info/opinions various experts might have. Thanks so much David

David,For a start.... First thing (will seem obvious) is the linkage (sp?). Is it OK, not sloppy, loose etc. If you put the motor in "forward" and try to start, does the prop turn? (even if the engine doesn't start). Is there any "grinding" sound when puting the gear switch in forward/reverse? Any sound at all? Tsuriki PS Hats off to you for trying to help the buyer out even though you sold it "as is". |

TS- I understand there is no grinding. Apparently, if you increase rpm's and push tiller lever toward forward the prop slowly spins abit. By the way, it's a 4 stroke, didn't give that info initially in post. He can take to a mechanic and have fixed and still have a solid deal but I thought maybe something "stupid" was the matter (in other words, an easy fix). I don't have any more info on it but Thanks. Has to be linkage. Not that it needs adjustment, it might be gunked up at the lever and not allowing it to shift. My 30 did the same thing, but got stuck in reverse. I thought the lower was shongo but it was just the shifter and rod. |

Bshot- Thanks. I spoke with the fellow, a nice guy, re your analysis. We all agree. I picked the 9.9 up in a boat trade 5 yrs ago. He has wanted it for 2 yrs so I sold it for $400. He will use it, while I will just let it sit. I believe he got a decent deal even if he has to put a few $$'s into it. Thanks for your expertise. David |

He robbed it. Motor is worth close to a grand. If he complains again, I'll take it:) |

Bigshot- I know!!! He's a close personal friend. I violated law #1 which says never sell anything to a close friend. He hasn't complained. That's why I charged only $400 for the kicker--essentially the price for the trim tabs I bought yesterday. He's a big offshore fishing guy. The motor will go on his Proline. We will fish together giving me use of the motor as we troll with it. It's sort of still in the family on our canal. I guess one could say it was not an "arms length transaction" so the dollars are sort of weird. He's not unhappy. Thanks David |
