I have spent the last 2 weeks stripping, scraping, sanding, sanding, and yes, sanding all the wood on my 87 Montauk. After all was said and done, there were several very small nooks that had residue stains and old varnish. I got the varnish with a heat gun and wire brush, but the discolor remained. Oxolic acid and brightner didn't seem to help, so I tried a portable steamer, (originally purchased for that nasty bathroom grout). WOW, what a difference! The discolor disappeared immediately! After drying, it looks like new! It even cleaned out the discolored joints (not that kind!) in the bow locker hatch and trim. I wish I had thought of this earlier, so I thought I'd post this for others embarking on the long, long, long (but very rewarding) refinishing journey.
