I recently noticed brown stains coming from underneath the side rail mounting points on the "inside ledge" of my '77 Montauk. I found a place where the fiberglass had been damaged, and water had gotten into the wood backing. The wood was destroyed. I cut several pieces of the glass skin away from the wood (on the top surface) and removed the what was left of the wood with a scraper and shop vac. From what I can tell, the wood chamber is surrounded by fiberglass, so there shouldn't be too much water in the foam. I plan to use pieces of Starboard to replace the wood, but thought that I'd try to get some expert advice. Is Starboard what I should use? Should I fill the voids around the Starboard with West System, or should I try to use some type of foam? Thanks for the help.

Don't use Starboard, Moby. Use Whaleboard. It holds screws much better and it is what BW now uses in that spot.

Marine-tex maybe? Says it can be drilled and tapped.

I have had the same problem with brown staining coming from the upper holes on the rear railing mounting points of my 77 Montauk. I thought I would try Git-Rot liquid in the holes first before attempting plastic surgery. Is that worth a try? Ken

I didn't realize that there was a difference between Starboard and Whalerboard. Where can I get more info on Whalerboard?

Hi again, Moby.

Email: tami@richlite.com

Tell her what you want to do and ask for a sample or two.

I used Whaleboard to plug drilled out screw holes; drilled and tapped them and remounted my rails with machine screws. SOLID!
