I would like to put a custom steering wheel on my 17'Alert. I have seen three, and would like to know if anyone has any suggestions: (1)Schmitt Control Knob Stainless Steel Finger Grip Wheel, (2)Edson Power Wheel, (3)Power Knob Wheel (?manufacturer) as seen on Boat Test 2219 (270 Outrage) in March 2002 Boating. |

Any thoughts? Suggestions? When I do order the new wheel, is there a certain size, angle, and thread type to order for the new nut to secure it? |

I THINK THEY ARE ALL A UNIVERSAL FIT. |

Believe they are 3/4" shaft with a 5/8" nut. All wheels are universal except a few. |

I believe the OEM wheel on Whalers was made by GRANT PRODUCTS. See: http://www.grantproducts.com/marine.html [Note: Their website uses frames which makes pointing to a particular section impossible. Also, their default opening pages crashes some browsers with an Out-of-Memory error. Their steering wheels are probably much better than their website design.] |

I know someone who, I think, is still looking for a 6 spoke defender if you decide to sell your old wheel. Let me know availability and a price and I will check for you. Bob |

Paul, To answer your question about fit and size, yes, steering wheels are almost, but not quite, universal in how they mount. What you are looking for is a 3/4" tapered shaft with keyway. If you are trying to match the size of what came with most 17' Whalers, it is a 15" diameter wheel with a 25° "dish" to it. In other words, you get more finger room behind the rim of the wheel than with the flatter 10° "dish" wheels. |

The aftermarkets have the deep dish. I have an original 1" 6 spoke that weighs 3 times the one on my Montauk. There are different quality wheels but the aftermarket $30 are about as good as the one factory on my Montauk. |

Paul, Here's one possible source for the Edson Power Wheel along with the different sizes and mountings http://www.caribeeboats.com/edson.html Ouch! $335 for the wheel plus another $34 for the nut. In the case of these kinds of wheels, the dish angle is going to be whatever is. You need only decide what diameter you need and then get the 3/4" shaft model. |

Leland and Bob, Ebay. There's even a six spoke wheel for sale there now, though it looks like a shallow dish. Any day of the week sees several of these wheels up for auction. You should be able to get one for $30 -$40. |

I agree with jimh about Grant's web site design. If you jump into the middle, their shopping cart function complains that you don't allow cookies (I do). It works if you start at their home page and drill down. Then after you get stuff in their shopping And it has that awful race car sound on It's a candidate for "Web Sites that Suck". But they have the wheel I've wanted for some

Darn you people are lazy. Everybody is carrying these things now. Must be driving the $350 guys nuts. They are nice wheels but I do not think they look right on a Montauk. or else I would have bought one. E-mail these guys....they have them and will ship. They also have jack plates for $135. http://www.bindersmarinesupply.com |

PS this is the 3 spoke solid SS wheel with the knob, like you see on Vikings, etc. They have 2 sizes, you want the bigger one. |
