Over the weekend I decided to see if I could change the flange that connects the steering tie rod to my 1987 Yamaha (not sure what it's called). It looked pretty rusty and I was a bit concerned about it for some time. The thing just disintegrated in my hands as I was removing the bolts that hold it in place. If this had failed while underway, it could have been disasterous. I'm not sure whether other outboards have this problem, but someone on this site mentioned corrosion of this part in another thread about Yamahas. I think this is a good thing to check at least yearly.

BTW- The replacement parts cost $55 at a Yamaha dealer.
