I have completed a custom mahogany console for my 15' 1977 Sport, and in the process have cleaned up the original wood as well. I would now like to finish both the original and new wood to be as close to the original finish as possible.

Does anyone know what currently available products (stain and varnish/poly) will most closely match the original?

Thanks.

The original woodwork on Whalers did not have any stain applied. They were finished in a clear polyurethane finish. There has been lots of discussion here on the FORUM about what finish to use on the wood. Everybody seems to have their own opinion. Do some digging and you'll find lots of different takes on this situation.

Thanks Tom.

I have read dozens of posts here related to wood restoration, none of which mentioned a specific stain. And now I know why!

I think my preference is to add a light coating of the Interstain Red Mahogany stain, topped off with their Goldspar one part poly. But I'm still researching. I find that you guys are a heck of a lot more informative than the guys here at my local West.

I used awlgrips 'awlbrite plus'. this is a two part brushable coating. US Paint has applicatin information on their web site. (not inexpensive) I don't know that you would need stain since the wood darkens quite a bit when wetted with the finish.

There are lots of options for the clear coat finish which are discussed at length on this forum; however, when it comes to stain I strongly recommend you be very careful. I think no stain looks best by far and matches the original factory finish, although some have argued that the mahogany will bleach out from the sun. I put a mahogany stain on the wood in my 13 and regretted it to this day. Will probably strip it down again this year. If you are going to stain, do a test area first complete with the clear coat of your choice.

Timo, I also did some custom wood work on my 13'. All new mahogany except the rear bench seat. I tried several stains and finishes and setteled on West Marine-WoodPro and it gave both old and new wood a beautiful gloss, redish /honey color and you can't tell the new wood from the old except where I "pluged" some old holes drilled in the old bench seat for seats the previous owner had installed.
