Yesterday, I tried to replace the Perko switch to my compass light with a very similar (almost exact) Cole Hersee switch. I hooked the new switch up exactly the same as the old one and it is reversed. I have to pull the knob out to make the light go off. I tried a second, brand new CH switch and even reversed the connections to no avail. What gives?

If the switch has only 2 terminals you probably replaced a "normally open" switch with a "normally closed" switch. Reversing the leads will not change the way it performs.

What is easier to do, get a different switch or rewire the compass? Thanks.

Rewiring the compass will do no good, you will only be reversing the polarity to the light bulb which will have no effect, just as switching the leads on the switch has no effect. You need to go buy the correct switch and swap it out; a very easy task.
