Bought a 79 Montauk which needs new gel coat on transom, has small bubbles in paint below water line. The chart for color match says 79's should be desert tan. My interior is desert tan but exterior is white. Has anyone heard of BW using two tone color scheme and if so , what color do I order from spectrum ?

Your boat is "Desert Tan" on the inside but it is "Light Grey" on the outside. These names are what Spectrum uses.

Whalers were not Desert Tan on both the inside and outside until 1984 or 1985.

So, to answer your question, you want to order some Boston Whaler Light Grey from Spectrum for your transom repairs.

Thanks Tom. The outer hull sure looks white, maybe because of the contrast with the interior color ? I'll order the light grey from spectrum and let you know how well it matches. Thanks for the info and for all the other info I've received from this forum.

I know it can look white, but it is not. Fading from the sun will lighten the gelcoat quite a bit over the years so do not be upset if the gelcoat you order is not a perfect match. You may find that the color varies even from one part of the hull to another.

If your hull has a lot of oxidation or fading, consider really going over it with polish, rubbing compound, or even wet sanding if it's bad. You want to get down to its true color before you try to patch and match anything.

Well, I order the light grey. Now to get the transom sanded and repainted so I can get the motor and controls all back together. My wife has been very patient with my , OUR , new toy. Our kitchen has become the layout for all the teak since I explained for the best finishes we need to keep the teak indoors. Will let you and all who are reading know how the transom goes ! Hopefully by next week if the Oregon Coast weather holds out!
Thank :<) Happy Sailng

I don't know why Spectrum does this, when I contacted them with the numbers from my boat they just said I needed "Desert Tan". I really thought the interior and exterior was the same color, DAH. I don't know why the don't ask if your doing the inside or out. Other than that they were great to work with and I was impressed tith their products.

OK, I apologize in advance (again) if this has already be answered. I have an '89 Outrage 22WD. Am I correct in assuming that both the inside and outside are the Desert Tan? I'm gonna try this gel-coat thing at least on the inside, starting with the console, so I just wanted to make sure that I ordered the right colors.

Again, sorry if this has already been specifically answered.

order the desert tan from minicraft. You may need to add a little brown tint, but it will match perfect
