Hi: I've made a few repair pieces for my '69 Nauset console, from some lauan plywood I found. As time permits, I will be rebuilding the entire console with marine grade mahagony plywood. However for right now, I'm using the lauan as a temp repair. I'll be using the West System to seal the lauan and then finishing with Z-Spar varnish as a top coat. Does anyone know if I can "stain" the lauan so it matches more closely the existing console which has such a lovely "honey" color to it. It's not really a big deal if I can't as I'll be replacing the entire console over the next winter. But I thought I'd ask to see if anyone had any ideas before I began epoxying the repair parts.

Oh..does anyone have any schematics of the mahagony RPS and/or forward deck that you'd be willing to share with me ?

Thankx in advance

Hobie

You can stain the luan, but since it is already dark, you need to be careful. I used Luan to build some custom seating for my 68 Nauset and used Red Oak stain for color. I then gave it 8 coats of marine spar. Email me and I will send some pictures back.
