I'm helping a friend of mine who just purchased an 86 Newport get it sea worthy. It seems to us, that the VRO tank (87 Evinrude) as well as battery , wires, etc. take up an inordinate amount of space in the stern. Has anyone the experience of relocating these items under the console ? Are there any caveats we should know about ? Thanks in advance for any advice

I'm in the process of converting my recently purchased Newport into a Newtauk. The owner's configuration had everything under the console with plenty of room to spare. The battery, oil resivour and 13 gal fuel tank....this left the entire back open.

Hope this helps.

Some suggestions: cut floor of console and rest battery and oil reservoir on hull deck; make no battery cable splices in cable tunnel; remember that batteries vent acidic fumes (unless gell type) that can attack items like life vests; strap or secure batteries and other heavy items as console location is rougher riding than stern location.
