I am mounting a leaning post behind my Montauk console. The cushion height is 32". I have experimented with distances, and it seems that about 13" back is right for me. At that distance, I can reach the steering wheel and control without leaning forward while the back of my legs touch the leaning post. Also, I can sit on top with the foot rest down and reach the controls comfortably. It seems closer than I would have guessed, but it seems that this is comfortable. This is my first leaning post, and I would appreciate some thoughts from others experience. Kelly

I bought a leaning post from Birdsall Marine and they told me to space the post 10" from the steering wheel.

This indeed is perfect placement. Note: I am wide bodied and this is plenty of space for me.

Note if you are to far from the helm you will not be able to keep firm contact against the post, and thus you will not be able to have stable position to access your controls.

If you have ever watched offshore racing, the pilots are in cockpits that they stand in and they are tight up against the back, so they don't get pushed away from their station.

Good luck.

Thanks for your reply, I already mounted it 13" back from the console, and since the steering wheel already sticks out a little, I might be at about their recommendation. I am anxious to try it. Kelly
