Any advice on straightening a bent skeg? Noticed tonight that the skeg on my 87 Evinrude is curved slightly. Wonder if it needs to be heated to avoid cracking it? What impact does this have to the steering?

I tried to straighten mine...snapped it right off. Aluminum is not maleable (spelling) like steel.

If it has no effect on steering leave it alone.

With a hot enough torch, some patience and a gentle touch, you can straighten it out. I used a MAP gas torch and several pairs of vice grips to apply a slow and even load. Be careful not to over heat the seals in the lower unit and cook them. A wet towel over the critical parts can help keep things cool. Remember, heat a lot, bend a little, repeat.
