I have an old Attwood steering wheel on my 1973 13 ft. whaler that I want to replace with a stainless wheel. I removed the cover and nut, but I can't figure out the rest...it doesn't seem to have the stanard type of shaft. Can anyone give me some advice

Welcome aboard. Sorry I'm not familiar with the Attwood steering.

My 1972 Sourpuss 13' also has plastic Attwood wheel with the pulley/cable steering. It is my understanding that you cannot use today's stainless steel wheels that are designed for teleflex or hydralic steering with the old pulley/cable system. I believe that if you want to switch to a stainless steel steering wheel, you will need to switch to the teleflex or hydralic system, both of which have several advantages over the old system. The main advantage is safety--if that cable breaks, the boat will make a hard right turn, possibly throwing you out of the boat in the process. I plan to switch over to one of the new systems ASAP.

I have a 73` `16 Currituck, and mine has the plastic Atwood steering wheel also, but has the Teleflex system that is factory. I wonder when they changed that on the `13s and `16s?? I am going to pop the cap off of my steering wheel to see if I can fit a stainless wheel on mine. Jack.
