I have repaired the blisters and holes and delaminations to the bottom and I need some help with the next step. There was some old paint also removed. The repairs were made with West epoxy and I think I want to try re-gelcoating. Is there a barrier coat that can go between the epoxy and gel, since the gel says it can not be used over epoxy?
If I don't gel what are the suggestions for paint?

Can't apply gel over epoxy???
On new epoxy there is a surface called "amoni blush" (sp?) that needs to be removed before painting or gel-coating. Thats the only limitation I've ever heared of. What products are you using?

I used West system and have not bought the gel yet but looked at some at BoatUS and West Marine, dont remember the names but there was also a fact sheet at BoatUS that said to use polyvinyl (sp) resin with gel.

I used Spectrum Color gel-coat and gel-coat paste and was really happy with their products and customer service. I don't know if they have a 800 number but reply to emails very fast. I'd shoot off an email to them and ask their opinion. Here is their website.

BHobbs,

Check out the radio interview with Mr. Watson of West systems. On the Continuos Whaler Radio this should clear up any issues with using gel coat over epoxy. Bottom line is that yes you can gel coat over epoxy you just need to prep the surface. I would strongly recommend listening to the interview, it is quite informative and a really nice touch to a great website.

I am repairing a 13 foot sport and have talked to many people about re-gelcoating the entire boat. In my travels i came across an older gentleman who has been building glass skiffs for longer than i have been arround and he told me to get a factory like finish, you should spray gelcoat directly over curing epoxy. So after i finish sanding my boat down to the original gelcoat and fill in some small voids i plan to apply 3 coats of west system epoxy(minimun for effective moisture barrier) and after the third coat of epoxy starts to set up i will start spraying the gelcoat. It should all be done in one day.

Like you bhobbs, I am confused as to the same issue of gelcoating over epoxy. I recently used MarineTex to repair around the boy eye on my Montauk. Went afterward to Boater's World to buy some Evercoat brand gelcoat and it states in large letters on the can, "DO NOT APPLY OVER EPOXY". Both the gelcoat and the gel paste say the same thing. What is the deal and what is the difference between the gel and standard gelcoat?
