I just got this from my mechanic, so I thought that I would post it for future reference.
To wire an hour meter on a Yamaha ( may be the same for others ) connect the + ive off the meter to the yellow wire coming out of the tach and the -ive off the meter to ground. On my Yamaha harness there is a dual type / extra plug on the yellow wire so that this is accomplished very easily.
This will give you hours that keyswitch is on, whether the engine is running or not.

You da man! I wanted to hook up an hour meter to my Yamaha 90hp and didn't know how. Thanks for the help. I'll look for those plugs.

Again, muchas gracias.

Thanks for the update, I just re-powered a 17 whaler with a 90 Yamaha and have the new hour meter at home to do this weekend. Previously, I had gone right to the key switch.

If you have a voltmeter, you can wire the
hourmeter to the volt meter.
