In refurbishing my 84 o/r 18 should i go with plastic or brass...I was told the brass are a pain in the....to replace. I don't really want to put anything on the boat that ruins the classic look... I know the advantages of plastic but really want to keep as orig as possible. Anyone have any experience with replacing these brass fittings ?

thanks for the help
Kevin

those who have replaced their brass with brass by finding the correct tool to flare it, have been quite satisfied. However, I expect I'll be able to tell when my plastic version becomes a problem because the portion outside the hull which faces West every afternoon will likely become brittle and drop off. When my brass version corroded through between the two fiberglass shells, I didn't know until the exterior piece came off with the plug one afternoon!. If you R&R an '84 with plastic, only 1/3rd of the readers of this site would know it was not stock. If you're like me and have no intentions of selling the whaler any time soon, use plastic, and don't worry about for the next 10-20 years! Remember, whaler upgraded to plastic at some point without affecting resale value, or ride quality.
