Just restored a '68 Sport. It never had side rails but we want them. I found a source, but the wood diagram shows almost no wood in the side walls, just a 3/4" by 7/8" strip along the first "step" in the inner side walls. Yet pictures of the boat with side rails show them fastened to the side above that. Anyone know what I am missing?

What you are missing are the backing plates that were used on 13's of that vintage.

Instead of wood to screw into, these backing plates are through bolted with #8 machine screws. In other words, the rail standoffs and the backing plates sandwich the hull.

These backing plates are also used on some of the Montauk bow rails for the middle stanchions.

They are available from CMI as are the side rails themselves.
