Topic: Lube tilt problems

My Johnson 1988 88hp igs real difficult to tilt the motor. Just boat the Newtauk (88) and have greased three spots on the motor, How does one grease the piston that slides up and down. Need to tilt motor as i will be in a tidal slip, i cant find a pin to grease. is there a cap to br removed?

That piston is called a "Gas Strut" much the same as on a automobile. They cannot be lubed. The best way to cure your problem is to simoly replace the old with new as the old one has probably lost it's gas charge and is not assisting in your effort to raise the engine. My .02 Greg |

Took a propane torch to the hinges on the tilt and heat up the grease. Loostened one of the nuts and regreased. the tilt is working. I was able to lift the motor from inside the boat on the trailer. It is heavey but much improved.. replacing gas shock would have been 400 plus dollars. Whew !!! |
