Hi -

Since I need to do the 2 x year lower unit drain & fill, I went to the store to buy the gear lube. In looking a t quarts for $4 and noticing that it met a host of MIL psecs as well as GL-5 it occurred to me:

Is it any different than standard SAE 90 weight, GL-5 gear lube that I usually buy in 20 lb pails (5 gallon) for $20??? I keep a pail around all the time for my 4x4 exploits, already own at least 2 pumps, and would decidedly HATE to pay 400% markup because it is 'marine'.

Anyone know if there is a real difference?

Is it worth $4 to have peace of mind that it's the RECOMMENDED oil? I know in Mercruiser stern drives Mercury oil is recommended, and a mechanic who resealed one on an old boat of mine wouldn't put anything else in there.
