I am just about ready to re-gel coat my 13' sport. I have spent many pain staking hour sanding down layers of paint to reach the original gelcoat and am now ready to apply the new gelcoat. How many quarts will i need from spectrum to give the boat a factory like (20 mil thick) finish. I am doing the inside and out. IF anybody has done this, how should i apply the new gelcoat, what should i use to this it, i would like to spray it on.

Spectrum emailed me with an answer to the same question. You can expect 20 square feet per quart. They did not say anything about how many mil this was.

20 square feet? that doesn't sound like very much. 200 square feet?

Not sure how what the thickness was, but the service shop at the local Whaler dealer said that a quart would be way more than enough to cover an entire 15'. That being said, I'm about to embark on my first gel coat repair, so I have no first hand experience either.

Seriously, 20 square feet. That's why I put off gel coat repair this year. I'll try and dig up the email (if I still have it) and post it.

Just confirmed with Danielle at Spectrum Color (253-735-1830) that coverage on gel coat is 20 square feet per quart.
This link is for application instructions in PDF or Word:

OK...if a quart of gelcoat covers 20 sq. ft, how thick of an application is this?

I believe the application instructions said 10 mil. Hit the link in one of my earlier posts on this and it will take you to the application instructions for Spectrum Color. Also, is it possible that other brands of gelcoat get better coverage with equal results? Or can you thin the gelcoat more depending on how extensive the repair is?

20 square feet sounds about right. Gel coat is much thicker than paint. How much would a quart of paint cover? 100 square feet? If gel coat is five times as thick (and it is at least this much thicker) then 20 square feet sounds right on.
A 13' Whaler will be about 100 square feet on both the inside and outside, so figure 200 square feet if you're doing the whole hull.

I've decided to go ahead and plunge into regelcoating my 13' whaler and have read everything I saw in the forum but am still unsure of one thing. If the gelcoat from spectrum paints doesn't cure by itself where and what is the cureing agent? and do I mix it into the gelcoat or spray it on top? or what?
