Hello all in Whalerland! Could someone please tell me what they think a good price for a used motor in good condition such as the one above would be? I found one which appears to have little use and I want to replace the cantankerous old Merc 40hp 2 banger with it for my old Nauset. Any input would be greatly appreciated especially in lieu of this frustrating off-to-a-late-start boating season for me. Thank you!

Howdy, Wayneman.

That engine, the 3 cylinder looper, was a market breaker when first introduced in the 60s as a 55. It has proven to be one of the truly great outboard engines.

If the engine has had reasonable care it should be worth up to $500-$600 in a buyers market, more in a sellers market.

A great combo with the Whaler 16, by the way. I had a '79 70 on my Sakonnet and never had the slightest complaint in about 1000 hours of operation.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Hi JB. Thank you very much for your input. The price is right and it even appears cosmetically good so I think I shall go for it. And I don't believe in overpowering the old boat anymore than need be so I think a 70 should be "spot-on." Thanks again!
