trailer winch problem

Pulled the Montauk out of the lake today, and just as I made that one last "crank" on my trailer winch to make sure my boat was tight to the trailer, the little gear broke in two pieces. White metal. The lower gear piece that broke jammed beneath the big gear and held it from reversing. I put the chain on and used one of the two transom straps to make sure the boat wouldn't slide back if that little piece of white metal decided to leave. Good thing I did. Made me think there isn't much more than a 50 cent piece of zinc holding the boat on if you don't use the safety chain.
